Literal Garbage Fire Sends CT Firefighters Scrambling To Put It Out

In what could be seen as prophetic irony, a garbage truck caught fire in Fairfield County this week, sending firefighters rushing to the scene, authorities said.

Firefighters battled a garbage fire Wednesday morning after the contents of a trash truck burst into flames on Woodward Avenue.

The contents of a Waste Management trash truck ignited near the intersection of Woodward and Neptune Avenues at approximately 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, according to Norwalk firefighters.

The driver pulled into a parking lot at 145 Woodward Ave., near The Sport Haus and 203 Trading, and dumped the smoldering load to allow firefighters to extinguish it. Smoke and flames erupted from a pile of cardboard and plastic recycling.

Norwalk firefighters responded quickly and began extinguishing the flames but had to dig into the pile of trash to reach deep-seated hotspots.

Crews brought the fire under control in about an hour. No injuries were reported.

Norwalk Department of Public Works crews removed the debris from the scene, while the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is monitoring the area for potential runoff into storm drains, authorities said.
